Unearth A Story with Library Summer Reading!!!

Unearth a Story at the Lake Placid Public Library! This summer, we’ll be learning all about paleontology, archaeology, and all sorts of fun things we can dig up. See our full programming schedule, from June 30 to August 7, below to find out more. We hope to see you at the library this summer! 

WEEKLY EVENTS 

Tuesdays | Unearth a Program! | 10:00am-11:30am 

June 30 – Live music with Deb Cavanaugh. Jam out at our official Summer Reading kickoff! 

July 7 – REPCO Reptile Show. Check out some reptiles! Shows at 10am & 2pm. 

July 14 – Written in Stone. Reveal ancient gems and rocks with a geologist. 

July 21 – It’s Alive! Learn about decomposition and play in the dirt. 

July 28 – Adirondack Raptors. Meet living descendants of the dinosaurs! 

August 4 – Dr. Quinton’s Fossils. Look at fossils with a real paleontologist. 

Wednesdays | Teen Reading Lounge | 3:00pm-5:00pm 

Join us for quiet, independent reading. You are welcome to bring any book you’re reading or check one out here at the library! Stop by for any amount of time. Snacks are provided. Held in the lakeside garden, weather permitting. 

Thursdays | Play Group | 3:00pm-5:00pm 

Hosted in partnership with PlayADK, kids age 3-7 are invited to the library for an afternoon of fun! 

Fridays | Storytime | 10:30am-11:00am 

Listen to a story read and participate in an accompanying STEAM activity. Be sure to join us July 10 for a special Storytime with live music from RiverJack Z! Weekly stories will be announced on our social media pages throughout the summer. 

SPECIAL EVENTS 

Adult Book Talks: What Are Young People Reading? 

Read The Trouble With Heroes by Kate Messner and join the discussion on Tuesday, July 21 from 4:30pm-6:00pm. A middle grade novel written in verse, this story is written by a local author and very connected to the High Peaks and Lake Placid. 

Read All Systems Red by Martha Wells and join the discussion on Tuesday, August 25 from 4:30pm-6:00pm. An android goes on a journey of self-discovery in this science fiction novella that interrogates the roots of consciousness through Artificial Intelligence.  

Rainy Day Movies 

Enjoy a movie on a rainy day at the library! Dates will be announced on our website and social media pages for afternoons with forecasted rain. Stay tuned to enjoy the following titles: 

The Land Before Time | Rating: G | Runtime: 109 minutes 

Synopsis: An orphaned brontosaurus teams up with other young dinosaurs in order to reunite with their families in a valley. 

Jurassic Park | Rating: PG-13 | Runtime: 122 minutes 

Synopsis: An industrialist invites some experts to visit his theme park of cloned dinosaurs. After a power failure, the creatures run loose, putting everyone’s lives, including his grandchildren’s, in danger.

Colors of the Wild: Live Animals on July 29

Join us at 10am or 1pm for this live animal program with the Vermont Museum of Natural History.

Explore the differences in animals’ visual experiences and how plants and animals make use of sight and color.

Author Visit : Calvin Alexander Ramsey

Join us as we welcome author and playwright Calvin Alexander Ramsey for a read aloud and discussion of his children’s books. The Bookstore Plus will be on hand with copies of Calvin’s books for sale.
